Description:The plot revolves around John Sullivan (Joel McCrea) a famous director of comedies who wants to make a serious film. To learn about the seedy side of life, he heads out on the road as a hobo. He runs into a failed actress (Veronica Lake) who's looking for a way to get home. The two fall for each other and begin traveling together. She quickly discovers who he really is. Sullivan gives up his quest but decides to hand out money to some of the bums he met on the road. He's mugged and gets amnesia. Stunned, he assaults a railroad worker and is sentenced to hard labor in a swamp camp. Desperate to escape, he admits to killing himself and gets his photo in the paper. Released, he decides that people in hard times don't want to see serious movies - they want to laugh. And of course, he ends up with the girl.

Review - Sullivan's Travels

This movie can't decide whether it wants to be a comedy or social commentary, and it very nearly succeeds at both.

Some of the slapstick humor seems out of place, but the dialogue is hilarious. And, you'll get a good look at Veronica Lake's famous hair.
