Review - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Willy Wonka is a reclusive candy maker, paranoid about spies and estranged from his dentist father. He realizes he need an heir, so he puts five gold tickets in his candy bars. The children who find them are invited for a tour. Charlie comes from a very poor family. His only birthday present each year is a Wonka bar. It doesn’t contain a ticket, but he finds $10 on the street and buys one more. Of course, it has a ticket. (It really bothered me that the storekeeper doesn’t give him his $9 change.)

The tour is strange as the other four children meet a series of mishaps due to their greedy natures. But Charlie is a good, honest boy willing to share and is chosen by Willy to be his heir. But Charlie wants no part of the deal if it means leaving his family. This makes Willy want to go meet his own father whom he hasn’t seen in years. The experience convinces him that Charlie is right, and Charlie and his entire family move into the factory.

Charlie is played by Johnny Depp in a bizarre, androgynous fashion that was more than a little creepy. I know the story is fantasy, but even in that context it’s hard to imagine any parents willing to have him around their children.
