Reviews for The Devil Wears Prada

Review - Devil Wears Prada, The

Why I saw it: There was nothing out I was remotely interested in seeing, so I let Sally choose.

Brief Synopsis: Andy is a totally-unhip fledgling journalist looking for a job in New York. She hires on as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the top dog and the world’s top-most fashion magazine. (She’s hired because she’s different.) She doesn’t fit in at all to begin with, of course, but then starts to look the look and walk the walk. Her boyfriend (whom she lives with) is left behind. She does such a good job that she gets to go to Paris for the big show, replacing Miranda’s other assistant who was looking forward to going. In Paris, Andy finds out that Miranda is due to be replaced. She loyally fights for her, but then watches stunned as Miranda manipulates people to keep her job at the expense of Andy’s friend Nigel. Andy decides this isn’t the life she wants and quits the job and goes back to her boyfriend.

What I liked about it: The movie was well shot, well casted and well acted. It does a good job of showing the shallowness of the fashion industry.

What I didn’t like about it: On the other hand, the life that Andy goes back to — living with her boyfriend is just another kind of sin. Yes, people are more important than fashion or success, but sin is sin.
