Review - Dishonored Lady

Madeleine is a spoiled rich girl who works at a fashion magazine and behaves wildly with a series of men. She attempts suicide by crashing her car into a tree and is found by psychiatrist Richard Caleb. He makes her promise to call him before attempting suicide again. She gets involved with a rich jeweler, Courland, but this just makes her unhappier. She contacts Caleb and he convinces her to change her lifestyle. She leaves the magazine and begins painting in an inexpensive apartment. She meets David Cousins, the doctor who lives downstairs, and he asks her to draw some pictures to illustrate a paper he’s writing. The two fall in love, and Cousins asks her to marry him. She hesitates because he doesn’t know about her past. Cousins goes to Chicago to present his paper. Madeleine gets drunk with a friend and meets Courtland. He takes her to his house, but when she gets a chance, she ducks out and walks home. Jack Garet, Courtland’s assistant comes to Courtland’s house. Courtland accuses him of stealing jewels from his safe and treatens to call the police. Garet kills Courtland. Cousins returns just in time to see Madeleine get arrested for murder. When he doesn’t believe her, she decides not to defend herself. The trial is going against her. Caleb confronts Cousins and changes his mind about Madeleine’s guilt. Cousins goes to Courtland’s house and finds evidence of Garet’s guilt. Garet is arrested. Madeleine is cleared and marries Cousins.

Not terribly complex or well made, but fun. Hedy was stunning. Mrs. Geiger was played by the actress who played the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz and Ethel was played by the actress who played Mrs. Howel on Gilligan’s Island.
