Review - Family Stone, The

Brief Synopsis: Everett brings Meredith, his uptight, nervous girlfriend home for Christmas to meet his large and dysfunctional family. They don’t want him to marry her, so they all act meanly toward her, so she asks her sister Julie to come be with her. When the family still doesn’t let up, Meredith flees into the night. Everett’s laid back younger brother Ben follows her, and they end up getting drunk and spending the night together, but not sleeping together. Everett goes to look for them with Julie, and the two of them fall in love. The next morning, Christmas, everything blows up. Everett follows Julie to the bus stop. Meredith and Ben get together. In the middle of all this, we find out Mom Stone has cancer and this is her last Christmas.

What I liked about it: Not much. There were a few funny parts, like when the Stone family is sitting at the dinner table listening to Meredith, in frustration, getting her car stuck in the bushes in the front yard. But even the likeable characters were all cool with homosexuality and sex outside marriage and swearing and …

What I didn’t like about it: It promoted and excused all sorts of sin as mentioned above, although Hollywood, while promoting homosexuality, can never quite bring it off without pointing out how strange it is and making fun of it in subtle ways.
