Reviews for The Firm

Review - Firm, The

Mitch is a brilliant young lawyer who takes a position with a Memphis law firm that wows him with its salary and benefits package. He takes the job although Abby, his wife, is suspicious. Her suspicion grows when they get to Memphis and hears about the firm’s rules for its employees. But Mitch is impressed with his new car, new house, new furniture etc.

Things begin spiraling out of control when two of the firms lawyers die in a mysterious boat accident. Then Tarrance, an FBI agent contacts Mitch and tells him the firm’s chief business is money laundering for the Chicago mob. The FBI wants Mitch to photocopy files or face prison. Mitch demands his brother’s release from prison and a million and a half.

On firm business in the Caribbean, Mitch meets a mysterious woman who seduces him. The firm’s security man, Devasher, confronts Mitch with photos of him with this woman and threatens to show them to Abby. Mitch is now fully aware of the trap he’s in. Do nothing and risk prison or copy the files and risk death or at the least banishment from practice for revealing client files. He tells Abby about the other woman and she leaves him.

He hires Lomax, a private detective, but the firm kills him. Lomax’s secretary, Tammy, contacts Mitch and the two work out a scheme. Tammy sets up an office nearby and copies the files Mitch gives her. But Mitch realizes he needs to copy the files at the firm’s resort in the Caribbean. Tammy heads down there while Mitch works a scheme to expose the firm by getting the clients to agree to having over-billing investigated.

Avery, Mitch’s boss at the firm, asks Abby to go to the Caribbean with him. She says no, but when she finds out from Tammy what’s going on, she decides to go so she can distract Avery while Tammy copies the files. She, in fact, drugs him and helps Tammy. Tammy takes the copies of all the mob files and heads off with Mitch’s brother Ray, now out of prison. Mitch is cornered by the firm’s security men but manages to get free and confronts the mob, making it evident to them that they need to keep him alive to keep their files from being exposed. He turns over the over-billing information to the FBI, allowing Tarrance to nail the firm without nailing the mob.

We enjoyed it. It didn’t hold up to a lot of thought, but it was exciting and dramatic.
