Review - Foul Play
Gloria Mundy is a quiet librarian. Her friend encourages her to take more chances on love, so she picks up a hitchhiker. He gives her a pack of cigarettes to hold for him and makes a date to see a move with her that night. When he shows up at the theater, he is shot in the stomach and only has time to whisper “beware of the dwarf” before dying. Gloria runs to get the theater manager, but when she returns with him, the corpse is gone. She goes home and finds her room broken into. She’s attacked by a man with a scar on his face. He wants what the hitchhiker gave her and when he gets the cigarettes, tries to kill Gloria. She stabs him with knitting needles, but when he comes for her again, an albino throws a knife through a window and kills him. Gloria faints and comes to with Tony, a cop she met a a party, standing over her. She tries to tell the story about the dwarf, scarface and the albino, but since scarface’s body has disappeared, nobody believers her.
The next day she is chased by the albino again. She runs into a bar and asks one of the patrons, Stanley, to hide her. He takes her to his apartment and gets ready for love. She scolds him and goes hom. The next day, she is grabbed outside her work and taken to an apartment. She escapes and goes to find Tony. He investigates and now believes her. It turns out there’s a plot to kill the Pope by an anti-church league. Again Gloria is kidnapped. Tony follows, bringing along Gloria’s landlord, for some reason. Tony is captured and the bad guys reveal their whole story, but the landlord manages to knock out the bad guys and free Tony and Gloria. The Albino is at the opera, ready to kill the Pope. Tony and Gloria make a mad dash across town, and Tony manages to kill the albino.
I watched this several times when it first came out. It was never my favorite movie, but I remember it being better than I thought it was this time. There was very little humor. The plot was relatively clever and the characters were good.
