Review - Hellcats of the Navy
Casey Abbott is a sub commander on a mission to penetrate the mine field and enter the Sea of Japan. He’s forced to decide between risking his boat or letting one of his men, Wes Barton, die. His executive officer, Landon, thinks that Abbott let Barton die because Barton was dating Abbott’s girl, nurse Helen Blair. On the next mission, Abbott does risk the ship to save the life of another man. He then loses his ship and 60 sailors die when Abbott follows a Japanese freighter through the mine field. He’s given a hearing and exonerated. Abbott is sent on another mission in a new sub. A wire tangles his propeller and he goes down to fix it. Landon is in charge of the bridge when a Jap destroyer approaches. Abbott orders Landon to submerge and abandon him. Landon manages to sink the destroyer. When he resurfaces, he finds Abbott alive and rescues him. He finally understands the difficulty of command. He apologizes to Abbott who in turn, asks him to be his best man.
Some interesting thoughts, mostly spoken by Reagan, on the difficulties of command, but other than that a rather bland, boring war movie. Reagan’s acting was adequate but nothing more. I found Nancy Davis’ character almost unbearably bland and unappealing. The special effects were pathetic.
