Review - Hell's Angels
Brothers Monte and Roy Rutledge and their German friend Karl are students at Oxford. Roy is in love with Helen but doesn’t realize that she’s a tramp. Monte finds out when he takes his brother’s girl home one night and she makes a move on him. When the war starts, Karl goes home to fight for Germany. Monte and Roy join the British air corps. When Karl’s blimp bombs London, the brothers are sent up to shoot it down. Karl’s captain lets Karl fall to his death to lighten the blimp’s load. Monte and Roy are shot down but survive. Another British pilot crashes into the blimp and brings it down.
As the war goes on, Monte gains a reputation as a coward. When a dangerous mission comes up, he volunteers to restore his reputation. Roy joins him. On his last night at home, Roy goes to see Helen and finds her with another man.
Their task is to fly a captured German bomber into enemy territory to bomb an ammunition dump before the Army makes a surprise attack. The bombing mission is successful, but on the way back there’s a huge dogfight. The brothers are shot down and captured. Threatened with a firing squad, Monte chickens out again and wants to tell about the Army’s attack. Roy gets a German gun and shoots his brother, then is shot himself. The Army’s attack is successful.
Impressive for the time, although pretty cheesy in places. Bits of it were colored and bits of it were obviously shot when the movie was expected to be silent. The dogfight scene was impressive for the time, and the story was fairly interesting.
