Description:The citizens of the small Western town of Lago support themselves with a mine illegally on government property. When Sheriff Duncan finds out, the town folk allow the three hit men they hired as security to whip him to death while they look on. They then arrest the three men and put them in prison. A year later, they are due to get out of prison. A few days before, a stranger (Clint Eastwood) rides into town. He kills three men that confront him. The town folk hire him to protect them in return for giving him anything he wants. He takes advantage of the offer and soon has everyone wondering if they haven't brought even more trouble on themselves. He has them paint the town red and renames it Hell, makes a midget the sheriff and mayor and seduces the wife of the hotel owner. When the bad guys arrive, the stranger disappears until half the men in town are dead and the town is half burned down. He then arrives, kills the three men and rides off, leaving the remaining people in the town to confront what they've done.

Review - High Plains Drifter

Certainly not a cheery movie. The stranger was definitely an anti-hero. Who he is isn't ever clearly explained — a brother of the dead sheriff Duncan? His ghost? His reincarnation.
