Review - Ice Princess
Casey is a physics wiz who has to come up with a project to cement her acceptance into Harvard. She enjoys ice skating and decides to see if she can apply basic physics to the skaters’ moves to improve performance. She gets a job and buys her own beginner lessons to see if she can apply what she’s learned to herself. Her mother is totally focused on Casey getting into Harvard and against skating.
Casey can’t afford a coach, but she takes advice from Tina, her teacher. But this causes a conflict of interest when Casey starts competing. She almost beats Tina’s daughter Gen. To prevent this from happening, Tina buys Casey a new pair of skates just before her long performance. She gets massive blisters, which makes her mess up. Another skater tells Casey about Tina’s scheme, which makes Casey give up skating.
But when Gen finds out what her mother did to Casey, she gets angry. She never wanted to be a skater in the first place and decides to drop out of the competition. Meanwhile. Casey still yearns to skate. She works out in the pond in her backyard with some help from Teddy, Gen’s brother who also happens to drive a Zamboni.
Casey decides to turn down Harvard, which angers her mother. Casey needs a coach, so she approaches Tina. At the finals, Casey messes up at the beginning of her routine, but then sees her mother in the stands and gets inspired. She adds a couple difficult jumps to her routine and ends up with the silver medal. As the movie ends. Casey’s mom and Tina are arguing about who’s going to sponsor her in the future.
A definite chick flick aimed at junior-high girls, but since I went as a reward to Lindy for helping get the house ready for sale, that’s OK. It wasn’t too annoying. Casey’s character was likeable. I was the only guy in the theater, but I’m willing to do that for my daughter.
