Review - Jerk, The

Navin is abandoned on the doorstep of a Black family. When he becomes a young man, he realizes he doesn’t fit in and determines to seek his fortune. He hitches a ride to St. Louis and gets a job at a gas station. One day a customer asks Navin to fix his glasses, which he does by putting an handle on the nose piece. The man tells him he’s going to market it and split the winnings with Navin.

Meanwhile, a lunatic picks Navin’s name out of a phone book and tries to kill him. Navin flees and joins a circus where he becomes the kept man of motorcycle daredevil, Patty. One day he meets Marie and falls in love. Marie is afraid of commitment and takes off. Navin wanders around lost, living in poverty until he’s found by a private detective who gives him a check for $250,000 for his glasses handle idea. The money keeps pouring in. Navin tracks down Marie and they get married. He buys a mansion, and they live in luxury. But then a class-action suit is made and Navin loses his money because his glasses make people go crosseyed. He wanders away from Marie and becomes a bum on the street. Marie goes to Navin’s Black family and they help her track him down. He and Marie go back and live with his family.

Stupid and crude with some humorous bits here and there. Navin’s personality seemed to fluctuate between really, really stupid and somewhat canny and shrewd.
