Review - Jersey Girl
Ollie is a wealthy NY music industry publicist who marries Gertrude and lives a hectic but exciting life. When Gertrude dies giving birth to Gertie, Ollie moves in with his dad, a street and sanitation worker in Highlands, New Jersey. Ollie has trouble dealing with his wife’s death and starts to snap. When he slams Will Smith and calls a roomful of reporters unflattering names, he gets fired. He ends up living with his dad permanently and working with him driving a street sweeper.
When Gertie is seven, Ollie meets Maya, a cashier at a video rental store. They begin dating, but Ollie has never given up on his dream of getting back into New York city. On the day he is supposed to appear in his daughter’s musical, he gets an interview in Manhattan. While in the waiting room, he meets Will Smith and they begin talking about raising children. Ollie suddenly realizes he’d rather be with Gertie and drives back just in time to be in the play. He decides he’s happy in New Jersey and settles in to live there permanently.
• From IMDB — As of August 2003, with the failure of Gigli (2003), the studio removed all images of Jennifer Lopez from this film's commercials, trailers, and promos, out of fear that people would think it was another Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez vehicle.
Pretty trashy. The movie was filled with swearing (even in front of Gertie), drinking and renting porno movies. Gertie catches Ollie and Maya in the shower, but everything is OK because she uses the situation to blackmail Ollie into letting her rent Dirty Dancing whenever she wants. With George Carlin in the movie, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. What is surprising is how many famous people allowed themselves to be involved in this trash. Matt Damon and Will Smith make cameos. Neither Sally or I thought Liv Tyler was attractive at all. There really aren’t any characters I liked except for Gertie.
