Review - Mr. 3000
Stan Ross is a conceited, self-centered ballplayer for the Brewers who quits as soon as he gets his 3000th hit and waits to be elected to the hall of fame. The press hates him and refuses to vote him in. Then it develops that the records are incorrect and he only has 2997 hits. At 47, he determines to go back and get the three hits. The Brewers stink and agree to sign him as a publicity stunt. Ross’s teammates resent him, and more so as he stinks up the field. He finally gets an infield hit and at the same time starts to realize he’s a jerk. He talks to his teammates and they decide to try for third place. He hits a home run and is just one hit away. He proposes to his old girlfriend, but she doesn’t believe he’s really changed, especially when he stands her up to appear on the Tonight Show. On the last game of the season, with the scored tied in the ninth, Stan bunts to win the game, blowing his chance to get 3000 hits, but he gets the girl and is voted into the hall of fame.
A typical sports movie — a bunch of losers get inspired and do great things. But Bernie Mac is a totally unsympathetic character (and actor) and the movie was actually boring in many places.
