Review - Never Been Kissed
25-year-old Chicago Sun Times editor Josie Geller gets a chance to do a feature story. She returns to high-school to see if things have changed since she was there. When she was there, she was the school nerd, ugly and unpopular. It starts out that way the second time around too. She joins math club and is picked on by the popular kids. Her younger brother, Bob who is 23, decides to go back too, and he is immediately popular because he’s a star baseball player. He starts telling stories about Josie and soon people start paying attention.
Sam Coulson is the literature teacher, and he’s attracted to Josie. Josie is wired so everyone at the paper can see what she’s doing. Her boss tells her that her story is about Sam and how he’s hitting on students. They want her to set him up. Josie goes to prom and is crowned queen, but when she sees her popular friends picking on her math geek friend, she intervenes and tells everyone who she is. Sam walks out.
In a last ditch effort to save her story and get Sam, Josie writes a piece about finding herself the second time around. In the story, she apologizes to Sam and says that if he forgives her, he can come give her her very first kiss on the mound before that evening’s baseball game. The stands are packed and everyone’s rooting for Josie. At the very last minute, Sam shows up and kisses her.
Pretty lame. For starters, I’ve never cared for Drew Barrymore. She played the geek well, but I never bought her as the queen, what with her being fat and clumsy and not very cute.
