Review - Road to Bali

George and Harold are two showmen in Australia running from women they promised to marry. To get out of the country, they hire on as deep sea divers and are taken to a small island where they are to recover jewels from a sunken ship guarded by a giant squid. Princess Lala’s brother is plotting to take over the island with the jewels. The two men and Lala take off in a boat and end up on Bali where they are captured by natives. Lala is about to be forced to marry the king, but the boys escape and rescue her and get the treasure.

The plot is inconsequential. It’s the banter that makes these movies, that and the times they break character. There’s a very funny scene at the end where Bing Crosby is walking down the beach with Dorothy Lamour on one arm and Jane Russell on the other. Bob Hope is yelling that it isn’t fair that Crosby gets both girls and demanding that the movie not be over. He keeps rushing back to the foreground and pushing the “The End” words back off the screen. Humphrey Bogart appears in a scene from African Queen. Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and Bing’s brother Bob also make quick cameos. Dorothy Lamour was 39 when the movie was made and looked old and chunky.
