A woman is suing a gun manufacturer because her husband was shot. The defendant hires Rankin Fitch, an expert at picking and manipulating jurors. However, he makes the wrong call on Nick Easter, and it soon becomes evident that Nick is manipulating events. Nick’s partner, Marlee, calls Fitch and asks for 10 million to throw the trial his way. She also contacts the plantiff’s lawyer, Rohr, but he refuses on principal. Fitch trashes, the burns Nick’s apartment, then has one of his men attack Marlee, but she gets away and ups the payoff to $15 million. As the trial nears the end, Fitch sends the money to Nick’s account. Too late, he discovers that Marlee’s sister (who was Nick’s girlfriend) was shot years before. The gun company was sued then and won with Fitch’s help. Since then, Nick and Marlee have been stalking gun trials trying to get on one to ruin Fitch and get money to give to the victims of the earlier crime. In this case, Nick is successful in swaying the jury. The gun company is defeated, Fitch is ruined and Nick and Marlee get their money.

I read the novel by John Grisham and liked it. It was about cigarette companies and was better than the movie. The movie was interesting, however, although it moved rather fast. The characters were well cast.
