| Description: | Successful fashion-designerMelanie Smooter (Reese Witherspoon) is engaged to Andrew (Patrick Dempsey)son of the mayor of NYC. He asks he to marry him, and she wants to, but first she has to travel to the small town in Alabama where she grew up and get a divorce from Jake (Josh Lucas), her childhood sweetheart. At first, he won't sign, which forces Melanie to stick around and get reattached to her roots. Jake does eventually sign the papers, but when she's about to marry Andrew, a lawyer shows up to tell her she sent the papers without signing them herself. With the whole wedding crowd looking on, Melanie decides to stick around and stay married to Jake. |
