Review - Trail of the Pink Panther

The Pink Panther diamond is stolen from a museum in Lugash again. The president requests Clouseau’s help. He starts out in his incompetent way and then his plane disappears. The rest of the movie involves a reporter, Marie Jouyet, traveling around interviewing Clouseau’s associates and adversaries. Most of these are played by actors and actresses who appeared in earlier movies — now much older. One strange sub-plot has a gangster kidnapping Marie and trying to bribe and threaten her to quit her story because he’s afraid she might find that Clouseau is still alive. We never find out if Clouseau is dead, or if he is, who killed him. We never find out what happened to the diamond. It was weak all around. I gave it a 5.

• All of Peter Sellers' scenes in this movie are made up from outtakes and unused scenes from The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976). New scenes were filmed with the other cast members to provide a framework for the Sellers sequences.

• David Niven filmed his scenes for this film and Curse of the Pink Panther (1983) at the same time, due to his ill health. His voice was so weak that professional celebrity impressionist Rich Little. was hired to dub Niven's voice.

• Peter Sellers' third wife, Lynne Frederick, won a $1.475 million lawsuit against the makers of this film. She said the film insulted the memory of her late husband.
