Ryan is a U.S. pilot shot down over German-occupied Italy. He’s thrown in a P.O.W. camp with a British regiment under Major Fincham who believes it’s his duty to try to escape, no matter cost. Ryan ranks him and takes over command of the prisoners. He halts all escape attempts in exchange for decent clothes and food. When Italy surrenders and Germany takes over the whole country, the Italian camp guards desert. The petty commandant, Battaglia is about to be hung by Fincham when Ryan intervenes and locks him up. Ryan, with the help of a sympathetic Italian officer, Oriani head for the coast. But Battaglia gets loose and sets the German on their tail. Ryan and all the men are captured and put on a trail for Germany. Ryan masterminds a takeover, and the trail, with prisoners disguised as German guards heads north for Switzerland. There’s an Italian girl on the train who was shacked up with a German officer. When she tries to escape, Ryan is forced to kill her. Near the border, they are overtaken by a German troop train. There’s a shoot-out and the Germans are beaten off, but Ryan is killed.

I didn’t find it very interesting or believable. Sinatra basically sleepwalks through his performance. The British overplay their Britishness to an extreme. The Italian girl was just there because there were no other women in the picture and she was pretty.
