Review - Who Is Cletis Tout?
Finch helps his friend Micah escape from prison. The two are set up with new identities by Dr. Savian. Unfortunately, Finch is set up with Cletis Tout, a photojournalist who is killed by the mob because he took a picture of a mobster killing a girl. When Finch starts showing up as Tout, the mob thinks they’ve killed the wrong man and go for Finch.
Meanwhile, Micah reunites with his daughter Tess. Years before, Micah stole some diamonds and hid them. Now the three of them plan to go looking for them. But the mob shows up first and kills Micah in an attempt to gun down Finch. Finch and Tess go looking for the diamonds and find them — inside a newly-built penitentiary. Finch gets himself arrested at Tout and asks to be put in prison for his own safety from the mob. Detective Tripp knows Finch is up to something and has him watched, but doesn’t notice Finch sending the diamonds to Tess two by two attached to homing pigeons.
But Tripp does find out that Finch isn’t Tout. Finch tells him where the tape of the mob killing is, and Tripp lets Finch go. He quickly finds himself captured by Critical Jim, the hit man hired by the mob to finish Tout off. Finch tells Jim the entire story. Jim loves old movies and sees Finch’s story as a great plot. He lets Finch go to find the girl (which he does) and kills the mobsters who followed to kill Finch.
The entire movie was shot as a series of flashbacks. It was a bit slow moving, and the language was bad, but the characters were good and the intricacy of it was great. Critical Jim spoke in movie lines throughout. And the whole homing pigeon thing was stupid. Pigeons only know to fly home, not back and forth between two locations.
