Blackie and Jim are childhood friends who grow up to prominance in NY — Blackie as a big time gambler and Jim as governor. Eleanor is the woman who loves them both, but she leaves Blackie for Jim because she disapproves of his life-style. When Jim runs for governor, Eleanor tells Blackie about a rival who is about to publish a scandal. Blackie "helps" his friend by killing the man. He's caught and convicted. Jim wants to help, but his principles prevent him and Blackie goes to the chair.

Review - Manhattan Melodrama

The subject matter wasn't terribly to my taste, but it was convincing enough to get us to consider the governor's position and what we would have done. It also seemed better edited and acted than many movies from the early 1930s.
