Description:Louis Mahe(Jean-Paul Belmondo) is a tobacco planter on Reunion. He sends away for a bride named Julie, but when she arrives, she doesn't look like her picture. He soon falls in love with Julie (Catherine Deneuve), and gives her access to his bank account. She disappears with all his money. Julie's sister shows up and tells him the woman he married wasn't Julie. Louis travels to France and finds his wife in a nightclub. He means to kill her, but can't. She tells him her name is Marion and that her old boyfriend, Richard, killed Julie and told her to steal Louis' money. Louis and Marion confess that they have grown to love each other. They rent a house. A detective shows up to arrest Marion for the murder of Julie and Louis kills him. They hide the body and flee together. They frequently argue and have to run from the police, and she even tries to kill him, but through it all they still love each other. The movie ends with them without a cent to their names, wandering off together toward Switzerland.

Review - La Sirene du Mississippi

Pretty good. Rather Hitchcockian in nature. Catherine Deneuve is stunning. There were some plot holes — like why he went to France and how he just happened to find Marion there. But overall I enjoyed it.
