The police figure that a teenager from the slums could never know the answers without cheating, so they arrest him and beat him to make him confess. He explains to the police, through a series of flashbacks, what his life was like and how he managed to know the answers to all the questions. The police believe him, and he's allowed to finish the show.

The story he unfolds begins in the slums with his mother and older brother Salim. When their mother is murdered, the two boys have to fend for themselves. They are joined by a little orphan girl (Latika). The three get involved with a man who exploits orphans as beggars. When Salim finds out that Jamal is about to be blinding to increase his value, the brothers run. Salim insists that Latika be left behind. Jamal never forgets her. He seeks her out years later and finds her still in control of the same man, now being trained as a prostitute. Salim murders the man, and the three run, but Salim soon turns on his brother and ditches him, dragging Latika along. When Jamal finds them again, they work for a gangster. Salim tries to get Latika to leave with him, but she is caught and beaten. That's when he determines to go on the quiz show, knowing that Latika watches it and hoping that she will find him. When Salim sees Jamal on TV, he helps Latika escape, then kills the gangster and is killed himself. Jamal wins the top prize and finds Latika.

Review - Slumdog Millionaire

Sick, sad and compelling. My determination never to go to India has been heightened by this film. Still, I couldn't help rooting for Jamal and Latika.
