Description:Maximus (Russel Crowe) is a Roman general much loved by Caesar Marcus Aurilius Maximus (Richard Harris). Aurilius' son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) is a corrupt coward, so Aurilius asks Maximus to become emperor just long enough to restore the republic. Commodus finds out and kills Aurilius, then orders Maximus to be murdered. Maximus escapes and returns to his home to find his wife and son murdered on Commodus' orders. Maximus is then captured and sold as a slave. He returns to Rome as a gladiator, and when he excels in the arena, his identity becomes know. A few senators, along with Commodus' sister Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) plot to release Maximus to get the army. Commodus finds out and challenges Maximus to a battle in the arena, but stabs him in the back first to weaken him. Maximus survives just long enough to kill Commodus.

Review - Gladiator

I'm not really into gladiator movies or Rome in general, but Russell Crowe did an excellent job as Maximus. The movie was a bit too gorey for my taste, but I'm glad I watched it once.
