Description:Jean (Virginia McKenna) is a secretary in Malaysia when WWII breaks out. She's captured, along with several other women and a few children, by the Japanese who force them to march from place to place for months — nobody wants to be responsible for them. Along the way, Jean meets Joe (Peter Finch), an Australian prisoner. They hit it off, but Joe is caught stealing food for the women and is beaten. Jean thinks he is dead. After the war, Jean returns to the village where they were finally allowed to settle and builds a well in appreciation for what the residents did for her. She discovers that Joe is alive and travels to Australia to find him.

Review - A Town Like Alice

It is based on Nevil Shute's book by the same name, but concentrates almost entirely on the P.O.W. portion of the story with very little taking place in Australia. Still, it kept my interested and made me care about the characters.
