One of the earliest animated cartoons. Gertie the dinosaur comes out of a cave and does tricks (lifting her foot, nodding) as the artist directs her. At the end, she picks up the live-action artist and carries him off stage.

Review - Gertie the Dinosaur

I'm sure this was considered amazingly clever when it first came out. McCay used a dinosaur because, in an earlier cartoon featuring a mosquito, he'd been accused of photographing the subject and tracing it.
