Description:The tramp (Charles Chaplin) works in a dehumanizing assembly-line job in a factory. Things are constantly going wrong, and he gets fired. He meets an orphan girl (Paulette Goddard) who has just stolen some bread and helps keep her out of jail. He however, keeps getting into trouble and thrown in and out of jail. He also keeps finding jobs and losing them, either from incompetence or labor strikes. He and the girl live in an old shack. She finally gets a job as a dancer in a night club, and when he gets out, he gets hired as a waiter. Again everything goes wrong, but then he tries to sing and is a big hit. They're both set with jobs finally, but then the truant officers show up and attempt to grab the girl. The tramp and the girl take off together, still without jobs, money, or a home, but smiling and together.

Review - Modern Times

Some really funny bits — roller skating near a drop-off, carrying a tray in a crowd of dancers, working on machines. People say it has Communist leanings, but I just enjoyed it for the comedy. Goddard didn't look like a juvenile orphan, but she was Chaplin's girlfriend at the time so she got the job.
