Description:Near the end of WWII, Kelly (Clint Eastwood) captures a German officer and finds out about a huge hoard of Nazi gold in a bank 30 miles behind enemy lines. He convinces his platoon, led by Sgt. Big Joe (Telly Savalas) to go for it. For weapons, they bring in Crapgame (Don Rickles), a supply sergeant. And then they find Sgt. Oddball (Donald Sutherland) who has somehow retired from the war with three tanks. They break through enemy lines and make their way to the village where the bank is. Three Tiger tanks guard the square. The Americans infiltrate the town, disable two of the tanks and kill all the Germans except for one in the remaining tank. They tell him about the gold and he helps them by blasting into the bank. All share equally so that each may ends up with about $800,000 in gold. They load it on a truck and take off out of town just as the American Army, led by General Colt (Carroll O'Connor) arrives.

Review - Kelly’s Heroes

Released in 1970 in the midst of the Vietnam War, and in the midst of the protest over the Vietnam War. It definitely has an anti-army feel to it. The "heroes" all abandon the war and their country's aim and look out only for themselves. And we all applaud when they achieve it. Donald Sutherland's character plays the stoned Hippie for all its worth, even though Hippie's weren't around for another two decades. But it's exciting and amusing and not meant to be taken seriously.
