Description:A fictionalized account of the Lincoln County War in New Mexico. John Wayne played cattle rancher John Chisum who bumped heads with Lawrence Murphy (Forrest Tucker) over cattle land and stores in town. Tensions were rising because Murphy kept sending gangs of men to rustle Chisum's cattle and upset his operation. When Chisum's friend Tunstall was killed, Tunstall's ranch hand Billy "The Kid" Bonney pledged to revenge. A huge gunfight soon broke out in the town and, according to the movie, when it was over, Murphy was dead and Chisum's band ruled the territory while Billy the Kid rode off to kill the crooked sheriff.

Review - Chisum

I don't know enough of the history of the real events to know how fictionalized this version was. The movie made Chisum out to be a hard, but fair man who wanted justice, not revenge. Billy the Kid was played as a sympathetic character trying to improve his life and reputation when the murder of his boss set him off on a violent spree. My guess is that, in real life, there was plenty of blame to go around on both sides.
