Description:After Pearl Harbor, Captain Rock Torrey (John Wayne) is assigned to desk duty after his ship is torpedoed. He falls for nurse Maggie (Patricia Neal), but she soon gets sent to a forward island. Rock is recalled to active duty and made an admiral in an island-hopping operation. He takes his smaller fleet against a larger Japanese fleet and keeps them from destroying the American force. Rock is injured and loses a leg, but is considered a hero. There are several other plots involving Rock's estranged son who resents his father but learns to admire him just in time to get killed. And Rock's friend, Paul (Kirk Douglas) whose wife is killed at Pearl Harbor. Paul rapes a nurse who commits suicide. Unable to live with himself, Paul takes a plane and flies a suicide reconnaissance mission on which he dies, but not before radioing back to Rock and giving him the info he needs on the Japanese fleet.

Review - In Harm's Way

I wanted to like it but found it difficult. John Wayne did OK with his character, but I've never cared for Patricia Neal. The subplots were thrown in but not given enough coverage to make me care. The battle scenes were boring because the "ships" were so obviously models and it was impossible to tell what was happening to what ship.
