Description:German Captain Karl Ehrlich (John Wayne) has been assigned to an old cargo ship because he isn't a Nazi. When the war begins, his ship is in Australia. Ehrlich determines to take it home. He sets off with British warships in pursuit. On board is Elsa (Lana Turner), a German agent. She and Ehrlich fall in love as the voyage progresses. The chase is ramped up after the first officer, a dedicated Nazi, kills three unarmed fisherman stranded on an island where Ehrlich stops for supplies. The British finally catch up in the North Sea. Ehrlich commands his crew to board the boats and give themselves up to the British. Ehrlich stays on board with the first officer (whom he knocks unconscious) and, unbeknownst to him, Elsa. He finds out she's on board just as a shell hits the ship and injures him. The movie ends with the fate of Ehrlich and Elsa unknown.

Review - Sea Chase, The

I liked this one better than I expected to. Even Lana Turner, who grated on me to begin with, grew on me. It was full of all sorts of drama — sharks and threatened mutiny and so forth — but it kept my interest throughout.
