Description:A passenger flight from Hawaii to San Francisco runs into trouble when one of its engines catches fire and causes a fuel leak. Pilot John Sullivan (Robert Stack) doesn't think he can make it to shore so he prepares to put it down in the ocean. But co-pilot Dan Roman (John Wayne) slaps some sense into him (literally) and together they bring it down safely in San Francisco with almost no fuel remaining. While all this was going on, we got to see into the lives of the other crew members and the passengers.

Review - High and the Mighty, The

Hard to rate. John Wayne, although he got top billing and was the hero, didn't really have much to say or do. If the movie concentrated on the crew and the fate of the plane, it would have been much shorter — and that part of the movie wasn't bad. But most of the time was spent wallowing in the petty problems of the passengers, very few of whom I cared about at all. There was even one ridiculous sub-plot about a guy who thinks his wife has been seeing another passenger so he pulls a gun and tries to shoot him. Other passengers wrestle the gun away from him just as the explosion on the wing occurs to distract everybody. One of the other passengers keeps the gun and, later, gives it back to the jealous husband (who by this time has decides he trusts his wife after all).
