Description:A tough Marine Sergeant, John Stryker (John Wayne) pushes his company hard to get them ready to fight, first at Tarawa and then on Iwo Jima. Stryker learned his craft from Sam Conway, who died earlier in the war. Conway's son, Peter, is in Stryker's unit. He resents his father and hates Stryker, but eventually comes to appreciate him. Stryker is killed moments before the Marines finally take the hill on Iwo and raise the flag.

Review - Sands of Iwo Jima

Wayne played his part well. The sub-plot about Conway was mostly annoying. The battle scenes used a lot of actual footage of the battles and so were confusing but realistic. The movie didn't really have much of a plot: it was just an overall picture of battle.
