Description:When he is forced to kill another slave in combat and Varinia (Jean Simmons), the slave woman he loves is sold, gladiator slave Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) revolts. Thousands of slaves follow and soon form an army that defeats the Roman legions sent after them. But treachery strands the revolutionaries in the south of Italy and three Roman armies led by Crassus (Laurence Olivier) defeat it. Spartacus is captured. Varinia is brought to Crassus' house along with her and Spartacus' newborn son. But Crassus' political rival, senator Gracchus (Charles Laughton), in his final moments before committing suicide, frees her and the child. Peter Ustinov is Batiatus, who trained Spartacus to fight and who carries Varinia to safety. Tony Curtis plays Antoninus, Spartacus' best friend.

Review - Spartacus

Long and slow, certainly not a movie I'd want to watch a second time. There were mildly interesting bits, but the display of the decadence of Rome was gross and I thought Douglas played Spartacus as something of a wimp.
