Description:During WWII, in the South Atlantic, an American destroyer under Capt. Murrell (Robert Mitchum) faces off against a German U-Boat under Von Stolberg (Curd Jurgens). Both men are cagey veterans, anticipating each other's moves and drawing the battle on over 24 hours. The Germans finally put a torpedo in the destroyer, dooming it, but Murrell manages to hang on until the German surfaces, then rams him. Both vessels sink, but not before the crews work together to save everyone. The two captains exchange salutes. All are rescued by another American destroyer.

Review - Enemy Below, The

The plot is one I've seen before. I don't know enough about sea warfare to know how realistic it is. I know it almost always took three or so destroyers to find and destroy a submarine. But the characters of Mitchum and Jurgens make the movie with their calm determination and respect for each other.
