| Description: | In real life, Roy Bean was a petty criminal who declared himself a judge in West Texas and became famous for his odd rulings. In this movie, Paul Newman plays the judge as a manic hangman who drinks and plays cards and becomes rich until he's beat at his own game by a lawyer. When his wife (played by Victoria Principal) dies in childbirth, Bean leaves town for 20 years, then comes back with a vengeance and destroys the town and the surrounding oil fields. Bean had a thing for Lily Langtry (Ava Gardner) who shows up in town after Bean dies and pays tribute to him. |
