Description:Mrs. Jordan (Billie Burke) wants to throw a dinner party for an English Duke. She invites a selection of people, not realizing that most of them are involved, either in illicit affairs with each other, or in shady business dealings. Mr. Jordan (Lionel Barrymore) has a bad heart and is about to lose his shipping firm. The man who is taking it by shady means is Dan Packard (Wallace Beery). Packard's wife Kitty (Jean Harlow) wants him to come clean to Jordan. Meanwhile, she's having an affair with Dr. Talbot, who is invited to the party with his wife. The Jordan's daughter and her fiance are at the party, but the daughter is having an affair with Larry Renault (John Barrymore), a washed up actor who realizes he's through and commits suicide just before he is suppose to head to the party. Also along is Carlotta Vance (Marie Dressler), an aging but still imposing actress who is scrounging for money. At the last minute, the Duke backs out of the party and Mrs. Jordan is stuck trying to make everything work.

Review - Dinner at Eight

Very much driven by the characters and their intertwining roles. The Great Depression works like an additional character, ruining the lives and plans of of the Jordans and Carlotta. It's not my favorite movie, but I can see why it's considered a classic.
