Description:Gallagher (Paul Newman) is the son of a mobster who decided against a life of crime. An aggressive investigator in the D.A.'s office decides to put the heat on him to find out who is responsible for the disappearance of a union boss. Reporter Megan (Sally Field) finds out about the investigation and reports in the newspaper. The union pulls out of Gallagher's business, causing it to fail. A friend of Gallagher's tries to talk to Megan off the record, but Megan prints the story, causing the friend to commit suicide. In revenge, Gallagher sets up Megan and the D.A.'s office into thinking he paid off the D.A. When the story blows up, all the people who were out to get Gallagher are out jobs. But Gallagher and Megan become friendly, and the movie ends with a hint of future relationship.

Review - Absence of Malice

Good story about the runaway press and the difference between fact and truth. Newman was excellent as the cagey, but innocent man who decides to fight back against those who hurt him by allowing them to dig themselves into a hole.
