He has learned to survive by looking out for himself at all costs. He immediately buts heads with Sgt. Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.) who makes his life in training miserable. He becomes friends with fellow trainee Sid Worley (David Keith). Zack hits it up with local girl Paula (Debra Winger) and Sid with Lynette (Lisa Blount), but neither of them take the relationships seriously. Near the end of training, Zack cuts it off with Paula, who is hurt because she loves him. Lynette fools Sid into thinking she's pregnant and he quits training to marry her. She says no, because she wanted to marry an officer. Sid, realizing he's been a fool, kills himself. Zack goes on to complete training and become and officer and returns to take Paula with him.

Reviews for An Officer and a Gentleman

Review - An Officer and a Gentleman

Crude and brutal. Gere did a good job of portraying a struggling man who has learned not to trust anyone but who wants to better his life.
