Description:Steve Nichols (John Ritter) is a struggling actor in New York City. On the way home from an appearance as Captain Avenger, he happens upon a grocery store robbery and thwarts it. He's soon the talk of the city, although nobody knows who he is. Meanwhile, he's trying to get acquainted with the woman in the next apartment, J. marsh (Anne Archer). After seeing on T.V. that people are desperate for a hero, Steve decides to take action. He manages to stop two drug traffickers fleeing from police but gets shot in the arm. He stumbles home and is taken in by J. They have a fling, but J. decides she doesn't want a relationship. Meanwhile, Walter Reeves (Bert Convy), an ad man promoting the Captain Avenger movie and the mayor's reelection campaign, tracks down Steve and convinces him to star in staged heroics and appear at a festival with the mayor. A reporter recognizes him and exposes him. He gets beat up by the crowd and decides to leave New York. J. sees him get beat up on T.V. and tries to talk him out of leaving. On his way out of town, he sees a fire in which a boy is trapped. He enters the building and rescues the kid but is trapped himself. A couple of bystanders rush in a save him. J. meets him in the crowd and tells him she loves him.

Review - Hero at Large

Totally cornball, but Ritter comes very close to selling it. Anne Archer is pretty good as his love interest. If you accept it as a comic book story, it isn't bad.
