Review - Joe Versus the Volcano
There's all sorts of symbolism in here, some of which I notice and some I don't but that's OK because I love the luggage.

| Description: | Joe (Tom Hanks) is a hypochondriac in a miserable job. A doctor tells him he has a brain cloud and only has a short time to live. Joe decides to get what he can from life in the short time left. He quits his job and asks DeDe (Meg Ryan) for a date. She goes out with him but can't deal with the fact that he's dying. Then Mr. Graynamore (Lloyd Bridges) makes Joe and offer. There's an island where the natives believe someone has to willingly sacrifice himself to the volcano. If Joe will do this, Graynamore gets the mineral rights. In return, Joe can spend as much money as he wants before he dies. Joe accepts and buys everything he can think of for the trip, including four pieces of gigantic, watertight luggage. In L.A. Joe is squired around by Graynamore's daughter Angelica (also Meg Ryan) who then turns him over to her half-sister Patricia (also Meg Ryan) who has agreed to sail Joe to the island and in return her father will give her his yacht. Joe and Patricia hit if off. A storm sinks the ship but Joe and Patricia climb aboard the luggage and float to the island. When Joe insists on jumping into the volcano, Patricia marries him and jumps with him. The volcano blows them out into the ocean. The island sinks and all that's left is the two of them — and the luggage. Joe finds out that his doctor works for Graynamore and that he doesn't have a brain cloud. He and Particia float off to live happily ever after. |
