Description:Robert Stroud (Burt Lancaster) is sent to Leavenworth Prison after killing a man in a bar fight. While there, he also kills a guard, which gets him sentenced for life in solitary. He finds a bird in the yard and raises it. This leads to a new passion, and soon his cell is filled with canaries. A sickness among his birds leads him to study and become an expert in avian diseases. He writes a book and becomes famous, but in time is sent to Alcatraz where he isn't allowed birds. Karl Malden plays Harvey Shoemaker, the warden when Stroud first gets to Leavenworth and then again at Alcatraz.

Review - Birdman of Alcatraz

Long and slow-moving. Lancaster does a great job with the character. The movie is based on a real guy who was a psychopathic jerk but also a genius.
