Description:Vagabond writer Alan Squier (Leslie Howard) wanders into a remote gas station/diner in Arizona and immediately falls for Gabrielle Maple (Bette Davis), the daughter of the owner. She wants to travel to France, but Alan realizes he has nothing to offer the girl and takes off, hitching a ride with a wealthy couple. A short distance away, they run into the gang of Duke Mantee (Humphrey Bogart), a killer on the run from the law. Duke steals the car and heads in the direction of the gas station, and Alan follows. With the law closing in, Alan realizes he can help Gabrielle by signing his life insurance over to her and having Duke kill him. It works out like he plans, and Duke is captured a short time later.

Review - Petrified Forest, The

I realize this movie was about life and society and not a gangster action film. But the degree to which the characters paraded their notions to the group at large was a bit ridiculous under the circumstances. None of them were real people. They were caricatures of the sort of people they played. This was Bogart's first big role, which rather surprises me as his acting here was terrible.
