Description:The plot, what there was of it, involved dance partners Johnny Brett (Fred Astaire) and King Shaw (George Murphy). They were performing at a second-rate dance pavilion when Johnny is discovered by a Broadway scout. By accident, King shows up for the rehearsal and gets a job performing with star Clare Bennett (Eleanor Powell), whom Johnny has a crush on. On opening night, King is drunk and Johnny fills in for him. This leads to a riff between the two friends, but King realizes that Johnny belongs in the show, so he fakes being sick and Johnny fills in and is a hit.

Review - Broadway Melody of 1940

Just an excuse for dance numbers by the leads, most of which were mediocre except for Astaire and Powell dancing to "Begin the Beguine," which was pretty amazing.
