Description:Gambler Bret Maverick (Mel Gibson) is trying to get together $25,000 to join a championship poker game put on by Commodore Duvall (James Coburn). Bret has to deal with all sorts of complications — a runaway stage, an attempted hanging, gunfights and fistfights, Indians, and Annabelle, a con woman who also wants to play in the big game. Along the way, Bret runs into Marshal Cooper (James Garner) who is hired by the Commodore as security for the half-million stakes. Maverick wins, but Cooper pulls a gun and takes the money. The Commodore follows and, it appears, has a deal with Cooper to split the money. But then Maverick shows up and takes it. It all ends with the reveal the Maverick is Cooper's son and they were working together. Maverick lets Annabelle steal half the money because "it's going to be so much fun to get it back."

Review - Maverick

Gibson was good. Garner, who I generally like was kinda old for this role, although I know they cast him because he was the original Maverick on TV. It would have been a lot better if the actress who played Annabelle had actually been attractive and likeable. But somehow the whole thing was neither funny or suspenseful or exciting enough to be great.
