His only friend is a pregnant prostitute, Daka (Naomi Watts) who isn't such a good friend that she doesn't want her money. Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) moves in next door with her son Oliver. Maggie's a nurse who has to work late hours. Oliver ends up at Vincent's house every night after school. Vincent teaches him how to fight and gamble. Maggie loses a court case and has to share Oliver with her ex-husband. Vincent has a stroke and his wife dies. Daka has her baby. Review - St. Vincent

I guess the point is that there is good in unexpected places. But Murray's character here is so flawed that it's pretty tough to see him as a hero — more like a bum who occasionally rises to the occasion.
