Description:Professor Rath (Emil Jannings) discovers that his college students are hanging out at The Blue Angel, a nightclub featuring dancer Lola (Marlene Dietrich). Rath goes there to stop them and falls in love with Lola. She's impressed that a professor is paying attention to her, so she marries him when he asks. Rath loses his job and ends up following Lola around. Five years later, he's totally gone to seed and is performing as a magician's clown. They return to The Blue Angel, and the owner makes a big deal out of the return of the professor. While Rath is being made a laughing-stock on stage, Lola is flirting with another performer. Rath goes crazy, then staggers out into the night. He's found sprawled across his old desk at the school.

Reviews for The Blue Angel

Review - Blue Angel, The

Very early German talkie with English subtitles. It's a sad morality tale without a lot of character development except for Rath. I wouldn't bother sitting through it a second time, but it was interesting to see it once as a bit of movie history.
