A little slow, but I liked the characters of Denard and Rose.

| Description: | Luis Denard (Charles Boyer) is an agent of the Republicans in Spain. He travels to England to try to convince mine owners not to sell coal to the Fascists. He's beaten, shot at, robbed, and framed for murder by Fascists agents and finds out that his contacts have sold out. The only person on his side is Rose Cullen (Lauren Bacall), the daughter of a lord. She gives him a ride when they miss their train, and she believes his story. Thwarted at every turn, Denard finally goes to the mining town and yells out the truth in the town square. Newspapers get hold of the story and the coal deal with the Fascists is called off. Denard is still wanted by the police. He escapes England with the help of a man who is in love with Rose, but Rose boards the ship taking Denard back to Spain. |
