| Description: | During the Civil War, Union capt. John Hayes (Randolph Scott) is sent to Julesberg, Colorado, to organize the stage line that will carry gold shipments from California to the east. His old acquaintance Clay Putnam (Andrew Duggan) is a Confederate sympathizer and is determined to keep the stages from running. To accomplish this, he employs the gunslinger Mace, who is just out to get rich. To complicate things further, Putnam's wife Norma (Virginia Mayo) used to be in love with Hayes. Hayes' only help at first is Miller, a one-armed soldier, and Miller's wife Jeanie (Karen Steele). The couple take charge of the local stage station. Things quickly get out of hand when Mace and his men kill Miller and then cause the deaths of all the people riding in a stage. Hayes goes to town for a showdown with Mace. Putnam, still against the stage line but trying to keep things from getting more out of hand, rides into town and is shot by Mace who is then, in turn, killed by Hayes. Norma goes back east. Jeanie stays on and runs the stage station by herself, but it's obvious that she and Hayes will end up together soon. |
